Johnson Controls, Inc. is located in Canby, OR and is an Automotive Supplier Plant. This location produces automotive parts such as batteries, using materials like antimony, calcium, lead, polypropylene, and sulfuric acid.

The plant was seeking an energy conservation project with annual energy savings of 1,000,000+ Kwh to replace across the line starters in their battery formation area.

JCI's Battery plant utilizes several exhaust fans in their battery storage area for ventilation effectiveness. The baseline system was a constant volume system operating 24 hours per day, seven days per week. NCE identified an opportunity to reduce the fan speed and ventilation during the unoccupied hours. As a result, NCE developed a retrofit project to replace the across the line starters with Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) capable of reducing the fan speed and flow rate.

The installed energy conservation project replaced existing across-the-line motor starters with Allen Bradley PowerFlex 753 and 525 VFDs for the clean air return fans in the battery storage room.

This project saved significant energy for the facility. Additionally, JCI was able to fund a complete motor control center replacement with the VFD project thanks to the significant energy cost savings.
